The Best Kept Secret in Exercise Methods

Gyrotonic-Equipment-258x300Gyrotonic and Gyrokenisis are coming to the Sammamish Club.  And just what are Gyrotonic and Gyrokenisis you may ask?  They are part of the best kept secret in exercise methods known as the Gyrotonic Expansion System.  “The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is a unique system of equipment and exercise that incorporates movement principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai-chi. Created by Juliu Horvath, this system stretches and strengthens muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body. The uniqueness of the System is that it simultaneously stretches and strengthens the body with minimal effort, while increasing range of motion and developing coordination. Exercises, synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, enhance aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promote neuromuscular rejuvenation.”  Gyrokenisis is the group class form of the exercise, while Gyrotonics is practiced individually on equipment like the Gyrotonic Tower shown above.

Our resident Gyrotonic Expansion Method expert and certified trainer, Tammy Gibson, is very excited about the new classes and equipment that are coming soon to the Sammamish Club.  Tammy sees Gyrotonic as the next evolution of exercise movement, even theorizing that if Joseph Pilates were still alive, Gyrotonic is the natural direction that his programs and philosophies would have moved toward.  In describing specific differences between the two exercise practices, Tammy notes that Pilates is practiced along a single plane in two dimensions, while Gyrotonics is spherical and three dimensional in its movements, mirroring more realistic actions in athletics, dance and everyday life.  Since Gyrotonics was originally developed to help with the inventor’s injuries in an effective but safe way, it is perfect for rehabilitation and is becoming more mainstream in physical therapy settings.

If you are interested in a fantastic workout that is the rage of celebrities and athletes like Madonna, Jennifer Aniston, Tiger Woods and Shaquille O’Neal, stay tuned for information about when classes will be starting.  Also contact Tammy Gibson at tgibson@sammamishclub.com for additional information on how Gyrotonics can help you.
